History

Early Beginnings 120 years ago

The Sir Moses Montefiore Jewish Home is one of the oldest and most distinguished organisations serving the Sydney Jewish Community. The Home was named after Sir Moses Montefiore, a prominent Englishman who devoted his time and resources to the community, civic affairs and welfare of the Jewish People. The Montefiore Home opened its doors for the first time on October 27 1889 in premises at South Dowling Street, Moore Park.

In 1924, pressure to expand the Home resulted in a move to Victoria Road, Bellevue Hill, where it cared for 18 Residents. In 1927, the Home was incorporated by a private Act of the NSW Parliament before rapid growth of the Jewish Community and aged population necessitated a move to larger premises.

In 1939, the Home re-opened in abundant grounds at Hunters Hill, catering for 26 adults. Following war time occupation by the Australian army from 1940 to 1946, by which time the Jewish population of Sydney had doubled, expansion of the Home became an urgent priority.

Since then, the Home has undergone significant expansion and regular upgrading, with the inclusion of the Woollahra campus (a heritage site) and the addition of the Basser Wing, Robins' Dining Room and Goldberg Lounge at Hunters Hill. Most recently, the Home has undertaken Stage 1 of its new campus at Randwick.
