Each year since 1923, on the first Sunday in November, Volunteers of the Home have organised a Fete at the Hunters Hill Campus, to raise funds for its Residents. This continues to be an important part of the communal calendar and every year, it continues to grow in the variety of stalls and quality goods on sale and in the number of supporters it attracts.
At the previous Fete, there were close to 30 stalls, offering a variety of delicious food – a noodle bar, smoked salmon on bagels, latkes and hamburgers – as well as a wide variety of quality product from mens’ and ladies’ clothing, kitchen gadgets and jewellery, to handbags, books and plants.
These stalls are fully staffed by Volunteers, and all goods sold on the day are donated. In fact, in many instances, stalls have been passed down from generation to generation, with grandchildren staffing the stalls that were started by the grandparents or great-grandparents.
The continued success of the Fete is made possible by the donation of goods, sponsorship and the support of a dedicated team of volunteers. Anyone interested in Volunteering at the Fete, or at the Home, should contact the Home’s Volunteers Coordinator Hazel Stein on (02) 8345 9154 or email volunteers@montefiorehome.com.au. Anyone interested in donating goods for the fete should contact Fete Convenor Roy Cohen on (02) 9904 3893 or email roycohen@optusnet.com.au
The funds will be used to upgrade the Home’s Special Care Unit at the Hunters Hill.
According to Fete Convenor Roy Cohen, “It’s a fantastic challenge for everyone in the community, an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of our frail aged with dementia.”
“Reflecting nationwide trends, we have experienced an unprecedented growth in the number of our Residents diagnosed with dementia. Currently, more than half our Residents require extra care as a result of early, middle or late stage dementia. At Montefiore, we have very specialised facilities to address the specific needs of our Residents with dementia, but demand for these facilities continues to increase. The funds raised in this important fund-raising drive, will enormously benefit our growing number of current and future Residents with dementia.” Says Montefiore CEO Robert Orie.
